<![CDATA[XoSoft: Soft modular biomimetic exoskeleton to assist people with mobility impairments - News]]>Fri, 21 Apr 2023 00:51:41 +0000Weebly<![CDATA[Exoskeletons and Soft Wearable Robotics Day with live demonstrations]]>Fri, 21 Dec 2018 09:11:13 GMThttps://www.xosoft.eu/news/exoskeletons-and-soft-wearable-robotics-day-with-live-demonstrationsWearable robots, also often referred to as exoskeletons, are seen as human-assisting technologies. The industry of wearable robots is expanding at a rapid pace: In 2016 it made over $16 billion. One upcoming area of application is health. Wearable robots can support rehabilitation after an injury or accident and can be used in the personal setting. Research in health applications for wearable robots or exoskeletons is important when considering the aging population of many developed countries. Between 2017 and 2050, the proportion of the world’s population over 60 years of age is expected to double to around 2.1 billion. Many elderly and patient groups experience varying degrees of mobility impairment. Assistive devices play a pivotal role in their lives and impact on their ability to live independently and perform the basic tasks of daily living.

The XoSoft project, funded under the European Union's Horizon 2020 framework programme for research and innovation, has been working on developing a soft wearable assistive device, aimed at improving movement for people with reduced mobility.

For the final event, XoSoft is organising a one-day Exoskeletons and Soft Wearable Robotics Day for researchers and organisations in the field of exoskeletons and wearable robotics. XoSoft is therefore happy to invite interested participants to attend in Amsterdam in the Netherlands on Thursday 14th March 2019.

The event provides:
  • Key note talks from three experts in the field of wearable robotics from the perspective of an engineer and a clinician as well as from a soft exoskeleton start-up company.
  • Project pitches to get an insight into the results and share the experience of five EU funded wearable robotics projects.
  • An opportunity to see live demonstrations of multiple exoskeletons and prototypes in action.
  • Interactive workshop sessions on “EU funding opportunities” and “Standardisation and Benchmarking for wearable robotics”.
  • Networking with more than 50 stakeholders from industry and academia to discuss potential collaboration and business opportunities.

Further details can be found here.

Registration is now open. Participation is free of charge. However, places are limited and will be given on a first register, first serve basis.
Live demonstrations of the XoSoft Gamma prototype, among others.

<![CDATA[XoSoft Live Demonstration at GNB 2018]]>Thu, 28 Jun 2018 00:00:00 GMThttps://www.xosoft.eu/news/xosoft-live-demonstration-at-gnb-2018XoSoft was invited to present the XoSoft project as a sponsor during GNB 2018 from the 25th to the 27th of June in Milano, Italy. The 3-day event was the Sixth National Congress of Bioengineering organised by the Politecnico di Milano.
GNB provides an overview of recent activities and breakthrough research in the field of Biomedical Engineering and aims at involving a wide selection of members from scientific and industrial communities: scientists, end users, stakeholders, entrepreneurs and start uppers in a win-win scenario. GNB 2018 provided a platform to support collaboration among the 300 participants from the field of biomedical research.

XoSoft partners IIT-ADVR and ACCEL presented the beta-1 prototype. To support the dissemination of the prototype at the booth (see figure 2), project related material was made available. This included two project videos, three posters, the XoSoft pocket guide and project post-it notes for distribution.

Furthermore, the XoSoft project participated in the GNB 2018 conference proceedings during a poster session led by IIT-ADVR under the title “Evaluation of XoSoft Beta-1 Lower Limb Exoskeleton on a Post Stroke patient”.

<![CDATA[Special Session on Soft Wearable Robots at WeRob 2018]]>Tue, 08 May 2018 00:00:00 GMThttps://www.xosoft.eu/news/special-session-on-soft-wearable-robots-at-werob-2018
XoSoft are co-organising a special session on Soft Wearable Robots during the WeRob 2018 from 16.-20. October 2018 in Pisa, Italy.
The goal of this special session is a follow on to a special session in 2016 to highlight recent and growing efforts in the field of soft wearable robots, with special focus on their application in neurorehabilitation and in prolonging independent living. In the last years, wearable assistive devices based on hard structures have shown their potential benefit in the area of neurorehabilitation. However, their everyday use is limited by their weight, energy consumption, comfort and wearability.

Soft technologies represent a possible solution to these issues. However, by nature they present performance limitations, and current applications are restricted to low to moderate levels of assistance, while more severe impairments are still the typical targeted applications for hard exoskeletons. Indeed, compliant materials, and soft sensing and actuation components, hold promise for facilitating monitoring and assistance in case of light impairment and even for prolonging independent living in other pre-frail elderly. This also implies a possibly huge scale of application.

The use of soft technologies implies not only different technical solutions (design, actuation, sensing, integration, control, etc.), but also a different approach. Instead of replacing a substantial missing functionality in the subject, a minimal amount of assistance can be used in combination with the functionality still present. Also solutions related with the remote monitoring of function and safety of a series of exoskeletons being used ‘unsupervised’ in the public area.

The contributors of this special session will have the opportunity to share their experiences and latest results in the area of soft wearable robots and exosuits, and discuss possible new strategies that can be adopted for materials and components, up to the whole wearable system.

The seventh IEEE International Conference on Biomedical Robotics and Biomechatronics – Biorob2018 – will take place from the 26.-29. August in Enschede, The Netherlands.
Over the course of the 4-day Conference, BioRob will cover both theoretical and experimental challenges posed by the application of robotics and mechatronics in medicine and biology. XoSoft is also confronted by these challenges of how human and machine interaction can support users. The involvement of primary users in the XoSoft project has helped us to build a system based on the requirements of patients. We hope to share our knowledge during the Biorob 2018.
